Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella: What you should know before taking certain birth control pills

In recent news, a lawsuit was filed against drug gian Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills.

According to court documents, the lawsuit claims that Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella (the generic equivalent) have caused serious health problems and side effects for some of the women who have taken them.

Across the United States, women have come forward in growing numbers to say that they took Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella and subsequently developed blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, gall bladder removals and other serious medical circumstances.

Drospirenone information

Most contraceptives sold today are made using a combination of estrogin and progestin as their active ingredients. Yaz uses drospirenone, which is a new “fourth generation” progestin. According to the Food and Drug Administration, drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties which can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems.

Women taking Yaz must be concerned about the drug interactions that could increase potassium, in addition to the drug interactions common to all combination oral contraceptives.
