Erin Brockovich Highlights Boilermaker Asbestos Risk

"I believe in uncovering deceit. The truth is, asbestos is a carcinogen and many manufacturers of asbestos hid that fact from the public."
For many decades in the United States asbestos was a popular choice for boilermakers to use when insulating boilers.
Unfortunately, the popularity of asbestos ultimately put boilermakers, boiler room workers, and boiler tenders at grave risk for contracting the cancer mesothelioma, the lung ailment asbestosis, and other cancers associated with asbestos exposure. We now know for example, that lung cancer can be caused by asbestos. Boilermakers who smoked increased their risk even more for developing lung cancer if they were exposed to asbestos when working on old boilers with asbestos insulation.
Many boilermakers were tasked with the building, installation, and repair of old boilers. This work often required them to cut and hammer asbestos materials, thus releasing the dangerous asbestos dust into the air.
It is now known that the inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause them to remain trapped inside the lungs for decades, at which point symptoms of an asbestos cancer may appear, or breathing problems stemming from asbestosis.
The tight quarters of boiler rooms, especially on warships, increased the likelihood that boilermakers and other servicemen and women would be exposed to asbestos. This is because the inhalation of asbestos fibers often occurs in confined spaces lacking in ventilation. Companies that manufactured boilers containing asbestos in America include: Babcock & Wilcox, Erie City, Kewanee, Combustion Engineering, Hercules, Foster Wheeler, and Cleaver Brooks.
Sadly, while the asbestos materials used by these corporations created a heat- and fire-proof environment in boilerrooms and other areas, the use of asbestos also damaged the health of thousands of unknowing boilermakers nationally.
Boilermakers rarely used protective clothing or equipment because their employers typically failed to tell their workers of the dangers of asbestos exposure. As a result, thousands of boilermakers are now dealing with mesothelioma, lung cancer and other conditions related to asbestos exposure.
